FISHGUARD MARKET HALL MURAL
The official opening for the renovated ceramic mural
A few years ago when the Town Hall was rebuilt the ceramic mural in the market hall was carefully protected from the general upheaval so that at the end less than a dozen tiles had been lost. Len Rees & Denys Short, who helped on the making of the mural in 1989, have with the assistance of the Facilities Department of the Council done what they can to to fill in those gaps.
The mural was made to commemorate the Music Festival's 25 years of music making and the Visual Arts Sub committee planned the basic design and oversaw its construction. Children from the three local junior schools and the infants school painted the majority of the tiles , supervised by artists from the 'Pioneers', a Cardiff based artist group. The tiles were taken from the schools and fired in Len Rees's kiln before being assembled in the market hall.
There was a 'proper' unveiling with children from all four schools attending and those who had helped went home with a mug made specially for the occasion. Many of those children will have children of their own now going to the same schools.
Unfortunately all the information on the making of the mural, how it was paid for and the history of all the incidents depicted in the mural has been lost.
But Len still had some of the blank tiles and we have been able to recreate the lost details and hope that they will settle in nicely so that no one will notice.
It will be good to see the mural complete again.

Update from
Iwo Zaluski and the Standing Stones
(see film clip on
www.youtube.com
) which we supported in order to raise money towards their forthcoming tour
'We came back from the StandingStones' Polish trip last week. It was fantastic. They gave 4 concerts in Iwonicz-Spa and Sanok, both in the Carpathian Mountains of south eastern Poland, including an open air concert in the central square of Iwonicz-Spa. They had a Standing Ovation at their last concert. The kids had a lovely and formative time, it was a great opportunity for them.'
The Standing Stones in Poland
The five members of the Standing Stones, Ben, Luke, Ella, Elena and Gwyn spent the last week of their Summer Term not at Ysgol Dewi Sant, but in the Carpathian Mountains of south eastern Poland. Their manager and musical director Iwo Zaluski had arranged a series of concerts in what used to be the lands of his forefathers, specifically the spa town of Iwonicz, which was founded by Iwo’s musical great-great grandparents Karol and Amelia Zaluski back in 1837. The Stones’ repertoire included some of their compositions, which went down well among both the locals and visitors taking the waters of this, one of Poland’s prettiest and most popular health spas.
The Stones’ concerts went under the heading of “The Eagle and the Dragon”, these being the symbols of Poland and Wales respectively, as they also played some Welsh numbers, thus bringing a taste of Wales to Poland. When not performing, the group went sight-seeing, shopping, riding, swimming, bowling, walking, high ropes coursing and exploring.
The Stones’ first gig was and open-air afternoon concert on the grandstand in Iwonicz’s packed central square, surrounded by cafés serving ice-cold Polish lager, and ice-cream and soft drink stalls, for the temperature reached the high 30s.
Their second concert took place in Iwonicz’s atmospheric old timber church, which was packed to capacity by a public eager to hear the young group from distant Wales.
The third concert was held in the plush House of Culture in the nearby town of Sanok, not far from the Ukrainian border, and their last gig was in the Concert Hall of Iwonicz, which was attended by the Mayor and the Spa Director, as well the Society of the Friends of Iwonicz, all specifically anxious to hear the music that had originated in the town! Their final encore, “All that Jazz” from “Chicago” brought the house down when the audience leapt to their feet and clapped along.
A Standing Ovation for the Standing Stones!
After the concert the Mayor invited everyone involved, including the 12-strong Standing Stones party, to dinner in a private room of the excellent Zdrojowa Restaurant almost next door, in which toasts, in Polish, Welsh and English, were drunk in both wine and fruit-juices, with pledges to do this again soon.
The whole trip was filmed, and a DVD and a CD will be forthcoming in the autumn.
After a hot and hectic week, the Standing Stones party flew home to Bristol, and only got home in the early hours of the last day of term. Needless to say, they did not go in to school that day.
