An Exhibition of painting, prints and sculpture
National Library of Wales, Aberystywyth

Mary Lloyd Jones discusses Denys's work with the Development officer of Creu at the opening in the Council Chamber in the National Library of Wales
'I have loved quilts since I took the photographs
for my wife, Eirian's books on quilting in the 70s and get enormous satisfaction
looking at them. In 2008, tiring of the problems inherent in making and transporting
sculpture, I decided after decades, to go back to painting.
I wanted to see if I could do something in paint that was in essence quilt-like.
The idea was not completely new as I made a coal miners 'quilt' picture Swan
Song, in the 70s when I was painting the S-Wales valleys. In sculpture
I had been working with combinations of squares and other simple building
blocks, growing complicated forms. Moving back into paint has allowed me to
look at the variations that come with changes in size, colour and spacing
on flat surfaces.' Denys Short

An Open Exhibition which presents a cross section of contemporary drawing
practice from artists across Wales. This is not limited to a tightly prescriptive
view of works on paper and submissions have been welcomed from any discipline.
Every medium has been considered, where the elements of drawing predominate. At
the intersection of visual stimulus,
cerebral analysis and physical interpretation via hand and arm, emerge the
marks we identify as drawing. Drawing is democratic, classless, egalitarian.
It affirms individual potential in a collective world. Its means are accessible,
affordable, portable. It is a fundamental human activity; timeless, essential,
compulsive.
